Storage tanks play an important role in the hydrocarbon processing industry whether they are part of a refinery, a chemical plant or a marketing depot. They constitute a huge investment and failure to maintain them could result in major losses due to loss of income and penalties due to environmental regulations.

Recent storage tank failures resulted in hydrocarbon spills, fires with severe environmental impact. Consequently, there has been a major increase in governmental regulations and industry attention to tanks and tank farms.

Understanding the design and features of tanks helps in developing operating and inspection/maintenance requirements. The course focuses on industry design standards namely API650, EN14015, NFPA 30 as well as IE Model code of safe practice part 19. Once the basics of storage tank design have been established, the course turns to maintenance requirements in accordance with API 653 and EEMUA 159.
